Different speakers have different priorities, but when it comes to party speakers—big-ass ones that you can technically take on the go—loudness is pretty important. No party ever turned up by keeping things at an appropriate volume level.
In that quest for loudness, Soundboks is known for bringing volume levels to 11, and its newest speaker, the Soundboks Mix, is no different. Soundboks says the Mix can get up to 121dB of sound output, which is mighty loud. For context, that’s as loud as a chainsaw or a thunderclap, so if you’re looking to supply sound for lots of people in a large space, this might be a solid way to do so.
To get that level of volume, the Mix is obviously bigger than your average Bluetooth speaker at home, but the company said it still paid special attention to portability, since you might want to bring this speaker to the beach or at least cart it short distances in and out of your car. For carrying purposes, there are built-in handles, and it’s compatible with the Soundboks Backpack as well as a first-party strap, both of which are sold separately. This speaker does weigh about 21 pounds, though, so you’ve been warned.
Big sound requires a big battery, and on that front, Soundboks says the Mix gets 40 hours of juice if you’re playing at mid-level volume and eight hours if you’re cranking things to the max. If you want more out of the battery without charging, it’s also swappable, which is something Soundboks says you can do “in seconds.”
I wouldn’t worry about rain or dust, either. The Mix is IP65, which makes it pretty resilient for outdoor use—you don’t have to worry about losing your expensive party speaker to a sudden rain shower.
The Mix doesn’t come cheap, but no party speaker really does. If you want the Mix, you can buy one now for $799, which is still cheaper than others I’ve seen in recent times, including this $1,300 party speaker from Marshall.
